Prof. Tan Chorh Chuan, Chief Health Scientist, Ministry of Health (MOH) and Executive Director, MOH Office for Healthcare Transformation

Professor Tan Chorh Chuan was appointed as the inaugural Chief Health Scientist and concurrently, Executive Director of the new Office for Healthcare Transformation in Singapore's Ministry of Health with effect from 1 January 2018.

Prof Tan's concurrent appointments include the Chairman of the Board of the National University Health System; member, Board of Directors of the Monetary Authority of Singapore; and member, Board of Directors of Mandai Park Development.

Prof Tan served as President of the National University of Singapore from 2008 to 2017. He held the positions of NUS Provost, then Senior Deputy President from 2004 to 2008. He was former Dean of the NUS Faculty of Medicine and served as the Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, from 2000 to 2004, in which capacity he was responsible for leading the public health response to the 2003 SARS epidemic. As the inaugural Chief Executive of the National University Health System in 2008, he brought the NUS Medical and Dental Schools and the National University Hospital under single governance.

Prof Tan is a key leader in Singapore's Biomedical Sciences Initiative since its inception in 2000, for which he was awarded the National Science and Technology Medal in 2008. He also received the Public Service Star in 2003 for outstanding contributions to overcoming SARS in Singapore; the Public Administration Gold Medal in 2004 for his work as Director of Medical Services in the Ministry of Health; and the Meritorious Service Medal in 2015. Other awards include the Dr. John Yu Medal from the George Institute for Global Health, Australia; the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal from the Polish Academy of Medicine; Honorary Doctor of Medicine from King's College; Honorary Doctor of Science from Duke University; Honorary Doctor of Science from Loughborough University; Achievement Medal from the Singapore Society of Nephrology and the 1996 Singapore Youth Award. Prof Tan is the first Singaporean to be elected as an international member of the US National Academy of Medicine.

A renal physician, he obtained his medical training at NUS, and research training at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford.

Dr. Philip Wong, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, National Heart Center Singapore (NHCS) and Founder and Medical Director, WEB Biotechnology

Dr. Philip Wong is Senior Consultant Cardiologist at the National Heart Center Singapore (NHCS) and a practising interventional cardiologist. He has seen greater than 20,000 outpatients visits and implanted greater than 5,000 coronary stents in his career as a physician. He is Deputy Director of the National Heart Research Institute Singapore (NHRIS), a 4,000 SqM cardiovascular translational research unit.

Dr. Wong has interest in Medical Technology & Devices and is also adjunct professor, school of materials science, NTU, where he teaches development of medical devices. He is Associate professor, Duke-NUS and continuous to enjoy sharing clinical experience, innovation and entrepreurship with medical students. Dr Wong has filed numerous patents in medical devices and in 2010 founded WEB Biotechnology. WEB is a Digital health company that has successfully commercialised the Spyder ECG solution, the world's first direct patient-to-cloud continuous ECG diagnostic and monitoring device. Dr Wong believes that Digital Health transformation, its interactions and innovations in the healthcare domain, will be key to how we face tremendous health challenges in the future.

Moderator's Profile:

Steve Leonard, Founding CEO, SGInnovate

Steve Leonard is a technology-industry leader with a wide range of experience, having played key roles in building several global companies in areas such as Software, Hardware and Services. Although born in the US, Mr Leonard considers himself a member of the larger global community, having lived and worked outside the US for more than 25 years.

In his current role as the Founding Chief Executive Officer of SGInnovate a private limited company wholly owned by the Singapore Government Mr Leonard has been chartered to lead an organisation that buildsdeep-tech' companies. Capitalising on the science and technology research for which Singapore has gained a global reputation, Mr Leonard's team works with local and international partners, including universities, venture capitalists, and major corporations to help technical founders imagine, start and scale globally-relevant early stage technology companies from Singapore.

Prior to his role as the CEO of SGInnovate, Mr Leonard served three years as the Executive Deputy Chairman of the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), a government statutory board under the purview of Singapore's Ministry of Communications and Information. In that role, he had executive responsibility at the national level for various aspects of the information technology and telecommunications industries in Singapore.

Mr Leonard serves on the advisory boards of a range of universities and organisations in Singapore. Mr Leonard also serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director at Singapore Post Ltd (SingPost), a global leader in e-commerce logistics; and AsiaSat, a Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed commercial operator of communication spacecraft.
