Dr. Nicolas Chapados, Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer, Element AI
Dr. Nicolas Chapados is Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer at Element AI. He holds an Engineering Degree from McGill University and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Montreal. In 2001, while still writing his thesis, he co-founded Machine Learning Technology Transfer company ApSTAT Technologies with his advisor Yoshua Bengio. ApSTAT Technologies applies cutting-edge research ideas to areas such as insurance risk evaluation, supply chain planning, business forecasting, national defence, and hedge fund management. From this, Dr Chapados also co-founded spin-off companies Imagia - to detect and quantify cancer early with AI analysis of medical images, Element AI - to help organizations plan and implement their AI transformation, and Chapados Couture Capital - a quantitative asset manager. Dr. Chapados holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

David isSenior Advisor for Data and Artificial Intelligence, UnionBank Philippines.
Prior to his current roles, David was Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) first appointed Chief Data Officer and Head of Data Analytics Group reporting to the agency Deputy Managing Director for Financial Supervision and subsequently Special Advisor (Artificial Intelligence) reporting to Deputy Managing Director for Markets and Development. In these roles he led the development of the AI strategy both for MAS and Singapore's financial sector as well as driving efforts in promoting open cross-border data flows.
David has extensive exposure and experience in both industry and academia, and he has consistently applied advanced technology with an analytical mindset to shape and deliver new innovation. David holds a PhD in Computer Science in the field of Machine Learning from the University of Southampton and graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London with First Class Honors B.Sc. in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Out in the "field", David is more likely to consider himself a data artist instead of a pure data scientist.

Charles Ross, Asia Editorial Director, The Economist Intelligence Unit
Charles is currently director of thought leadership research for Asia, where he covers a territory spanning from Australia to India. His team works with many Western multinationals from the Fortune 500 but increasingly with Asian multinationals as well.
A native Australian, Charles is currently based in Singapore and has recently led a number of projects analysing the implication for business of new technology trends such as artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0, smart cities, big data, cloud computing, entrepreneurship and the internet of things, for Hitachi, Cisco, Telstra, Microsoft, Wipro, Akamai and the Singapore government.
Prior to joining the Economist Group, Charles ran an investor communications consultancy where he managed stakeholder research projects and developed an index which tracked the corporate governance practices of emerging markets companies. Prior to that he founded a firm which manages initial public offerings across Europe, North America and Asia.
Charles holds a masters in business administration, focusing on strategy and organisational change, from the University of Oxford.
