Overview

In this session, the NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies (N-CRiPT) will describe their on-going research on the problem of human attributes prediction under privacy-preserving conditions.

Analysing human attributes such as emotions, gender and age in images and videos is very important for many applications. Many existing methods perform well by utilising information from human faces. However, face images raise serious privacy concerns as they reveal people’s identity.

In this session, the NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies (N-CRiPT) will describe their on-going research on the problem of human attributes prediction under privacy-preserving conditions. They first did a human study of age, gender, and emotion prediction in images under various identity preserving scenarios - obfuscating eyes, lower face, head or the whole face.

Motivated by this human study, they developed a multi-tasking deep learning model for context-guided human attributes prediction, and they will present its results. The session will end with a general discussion on privacy concerns related to image and video data analytics.

Prof Mohan Kankanhalli is the Provost's Chair Professor of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also the Dean of NUS School of Computing. Before becoming the Dean in July 2016, he was the NUS Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) from 2014 to 2016 and Associate Provost from 2011 to 2013. Mohan obtained his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Master of Science and PhD from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prof Mohan's research interests are Multimedia Computing, Information Security and Privacy, Image/Video Processing and Social Media Analysis. 

He directs N-CRiPT (NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies), which conducts research on privacy on structured and unstructured (multimedia, sensors, IoT) data. N-CRiPT looks at privacy at both individual and organisational levels along the entire data life cycle. Prof Mohan is personally involved in privacy research related to images, video and social media, and privacy risk management. N-CRiPT, which Singapore's National Research Foundation has funded, works with many industry, government and academic partners.

Jithin is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at School of Computing, NUS, Singapore. Presently he is working with Prof. Mohan S Kankanhalli in N-CRiPT lab. His current research is focused on social network analysis. Jithins obtained his PhD from the Computer Science Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras under the guidance of Prof. Sayan Ranu in the AIDB Lab, IIT-M. His thesis is focused on searching and optimization on graphs.

Prior to joining IIT-M he obtained Master of Engineering degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Computer Science and Automation Department at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India where he worked with Prof. Ambedkar Dukkipati in the area of Information Theory. He was all India Rank 2 (percentile 99.99) in GATE. He obtained his B-Tech from College of Engineering, Kerala University, Trivandrum. He has been fortunate enough to be associated with the best institutes in India through the course of his academic life. In addition, he has 4 years of industrial experience as a Software Engineer in the field of network protocols, where he has worked with routing protocols and also developed many new layer 4 protocols.
