Gait reveals an individual’s identity as well as physical attributes such as height and age. As such, this identifier can be used to secure smart devices, provide personalised services, and perhaps even detect walking abnormalities. Dr Terence Sim will explain NCRIPT's research into Inertial Motion Unit (IMU) gait which may be acquired from modern smart devices.
These days, devices such as smartphones and smartwatches are commonly used for daily step count but did you know that the way one walks- the gait, reveals a lot more than just one’s fitness? Gait reveals an individual’s identity as well as physical attributes such as height and age. As such, this identifier can be used to secure smart devices, provide personalised services, and perhaps even detect walking abnormalities.
In this talk, DrTerence Sim will explain NCRIPT's research into Inertial Motion Unit (IMU) gait which may be acquired from modern smart devices. He will also show how gait may be used for continuous authentication and its privacy implications. In future, Dr Sim posit that by using smart earphones (eg. Apple AirPods), society will soon be able to use gait for analysing some sporting activities and for detecting walking and running defects.

Dr Terence Sim, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean at School of Computing, NUS
Dr Terence Sim is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also a Principal Investigator at NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies (N-CRiPT). His research interests include Biometrics, Computer Vision, and their Privacy implications. Dr Sim serves as Editor-in-Chief at the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and AI, as well as Second Vice President of the International Association of Pattern Recognition. As a Singaporean, he hopes to inspire more locals to pursue R&D careers.

Dr Jithin Vachery, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, School of Computing, National University of Singapore
Jithin is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Computing, NUS, Singapore. Presently he is working with Prof. Mohan S Kankanhalli in N-CRiPT lab. His current research is focused on social network analysis. Jithins obtained his PhD from the Computer Science Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras under the guidance of Prof. Sayan Ranu in the AIDB Lab, IIT-M. His thesis is focused on searching and optimisation graphs.
Prior to joining IIT-M, he obtained his Master of Engineering degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Computer Science and Automation Department at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India where he worked with Prof. Ambedkar Dukkipati in the area of Information Theory. He was all India Rank 2 (percentile 99.99) in GATE. He obtained his B-Tech from the College of Engineering, Kerala University, Trivandrum. He has been fortunate enough to be associated with the best institutes in India through the course of his academic life. In addition, he has 4 years of industrial experience as a Software Engineer in the field of network protocols, where he has worked with routing protocols and also developed many new layer 4 protocols.
